Johnny has appeared in over two hundred TV shows,
seven years of ‘Welcome to the Ceilidh’ and nine series
of ‘Now You See It’.
In 1981, the coveted Benno Schotz sculpture was awarded
to him as TV Personality of the Year. That same year his
daughter Maureen won the PYE award for the best
performance by an actress on Radio in the U.K. Maureen
is currently with the R.S.C. at the Barbican in London.
Johnny’s younger daughter Louise won ‘The most promising
actress’ award a the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and
Drama and went straight into a starring role in ‘Blood
Red Roses’, a film for Channel Four.
In a varied career Johnny has been disc jockey for BBC
and Radio Clyde, has had two hit records, Scotch on the
Rocks and The Glasgow Rap. No stranger to the light
theatre, he played the Walter Matheau part in the Perth
Theatre production of the Sunshine Boys. His performance
received critical acclaim, both in Perth and in Glasgow,
where it was presented at the Theatre Royal.
He has appeared in the famous Gaiety Whirl at the Gaiety
Theatre, Ayr and he now holds the record for having
starred in more Gaiety Whirls than any other comedian in
the history of that famous theatre. As he says himself
“I’ve been to Ayr so often, I’m beginning to look like
Robert Burns”.
Johnny’s abiding passion is the history of the Scottish
Music Hall. One of the highlights of the annual Pride of
the Clyde show is Johnny’s brilliant tributes to such
greats of the past, as Will Fyffe, Dave Willis, Tommy
Morgan and Lex McLean. He is also in great demand as an
after dinner speaker, being one of Scotland’s best.
Johnny is currently starring in River City BBC
Scotland’s soap about Glasgow life!
